Friday Record Party: The 5 W’s (and one H)
Sets of Songs Where the Title Includes Who, What, Where, Why, When and/or How
FRP regular Lester offered this suggestion up a while back as “a paean to the dying journalism industry” and while I noodled on it this week I realized that this could easily and quickly break the 100-song Seeqpod HollaWalla barrier. To throttle the...

Album of the Day: Queen - A Night At The Opera
Let’s celebrate the one year anniversary of the first time we fed the ogre with the first album I ever bought way back in 1976 with my 6th grade dollars at the Sam Goody in the Exton Square Mall.

Feed The Ogre 1 Year Old This Week
The domain expiry notice in my inbox this morning reminds me that we’ve been feeding the ogre for a year now.
In the early days there was a lot more ephemera being posted on FTO. Nowadays it’s mostly albums of the day, music videos, a few local items of interest, and, of course, The Friday Record Party.
If there is more of anything you’d like to see in the year ahead, you 15...

Friday Record Party: Senses Working Overtime
Songs That Have One (or More) of The Five Senses In The Title
This one comes from The Ogre himself. For the record the five senses are:
Smell
Sight
Hearing (sorry, Ogre!)
Feel
Taste
We’ll leave it up to the FRP mob whether the ability to see dead people is acceptable.
As we did last time, there’s a little chat widget thing over to...

Album of the Day: Cream - The Best of Cream
Lester provides today’s Album of the Day enjoyment:
I would normally not post a greatest hits album, especially one with, in my opinion, two glaring omissions, SWALBR and Born Under a Bad Sign (a Cream cover - asked by their label to add it in), but this is a stunning collection from a great, rocket-shot of a band. I love Ginger Baker’s...
Album of the Day: REM - Murmur
KMcG checks in with today’s album of the day and a nice feel-good story to go with it:
I still remember the day in the Spring of 1983. I was in my house at Syracuse listening to WAER, the campus station, when on came “Radio Free Europe.”
“Whoa! What was that?” The song was so different from the keyboard-driven, gimmicky imports that had come to...

Seeqpod Status
just heard from a contact at Seeqpod that database repairs weren’t going as smoothly as they planned but that they will be back! So let’s hope they are back by next Friday’s FRP!

Album of the Day: Lou Reed - Transformer
While we await word from Seeqpod and the future of the Friday Record Party, let’s listen to Lou Reed’s second solo album from 1972. Aside from the smash single, Walk On The Wild Side, I didn’t latch on to this album until about six or seven years later. I was caught up for a time after that with Lou. My other favorite of his was Street...
Seeqpod Down Since Last Night
As Shaggy would say, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this, Scoob.”
Seeqpod is the powerhouse behind the HollaWalla which is the platform for the wonderfulness that is the Friday Record Party. About a year ago, Warner Brothers sued Seeqpod. Wonder if it all hit the fan.
Keep checking back today in case it eventually comes back up!

Album of the Day: Echo & The Bunnymen - Porcupine
A fitting album cover for the cold blast we’re just getting into. Echo & The Bunnymen’s 1983 album, Porcupine, was their third and where I jumped on the E&B bandwagon. The whole album is cold with the percussive sounds of banging radiators and bottles and recalls the cold dark winter of 1982-83.
The opening middle-eastern...

Five Albums That Steered Me In The Right Direction: The La’s - The La’s
Dr. Sexton Album #5
This came a little late in the game for me (I think “There She Goes” and a few singles came out around ‘88 or so, with the (in)famous album appearing a few years later) but it certainly was a godsend. All I remember is MTV-dominated music from that era — hair metal...

Album of the Day: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Damn The Torpedoes
Doc Sexton reminded me yesterday that I was remiss in not noting his Gators’ BCS Championship last week on Feed The Ogre. With all that Doc Sexton does to help feed the ogre, I felt bad. So here’s Gainesville, FLA’s own, Tom Petty with my favorite album of his. I can still hear the echo of Refugee’s...

Album of the Day: Pete Townshend - Empty Glass
Today’s album of the day comes from Dallas Cowboys fan and Albany dweller, Rick T. I’m especially happy this fine Monday morning to also post this as a special dedication to NY Giants fan Lester and his family as well.
From Rick:
I was an innocent, catholic school 7th grader when I got my hands on this one. It was the first music I owned...

Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way
Just in from an evening out at Victory Brewing and playing a couple of songs. And this came on. I just have to say that this is the very best and my favorite Psychedelic Furs song. The combination of xylophone along with everything else going one wraps up the winter of 1982/83 in a nutshell for me.

Friday Record Party: Conjunction Junction
Song Titles That Use “And” or “But” or “Or”
A long time ago, BPMc3 had the idea for a theme called “This & That: 3 Word Song Titles With ‘And’ In The Middle”. One of my jobs here at the Friday Record Party is to craft themes that aren’t too easy but also (i used a conjunction...
Five Albums That Steered Me In The Right Direction: Elvis Presley - Complete Sun Sessions
Dr. Sexton Album #4
UPDATE: Just realizing that the playlist above is indeed a complete hodgepodge of 30 second samples and a general mess. My apologies for that. I’ll leave it up for now and you can listen to what you will — though it doesn’t keep with the usual serenity of enjoying a full...
Album Of The Day: They Might Be Giants - Flood
The Ogre offers this one up today: In researching a reason why you should play Flood by TMBG, I came across the following factoid… “Flood is repeatedly quoted by Frank Black as one of his favourite albums.” from Wikipedia.
I’ll add my 2 cents about TMBG. The Mrs and I went to see them at the Chestnut Cabaret on 38th Street...
Album of the Day: Blitzen Trapper - Furr
I haven’t heard this full album yet (come on, Chester County Library!) but it was on a lot of ‘best of 2008’ lists so I wanted to have a listen. I have the track “Furr” on heavy rotation at home. Whatever the rest of the album sounds like, this band has one great thing going for them — a heavy metal sounding name and...
