Robyn Hitchcock - My Wife & My Dead Wife

Wanted to use this for Halloween’s Friday Record Party and for last week’s as well — my favorite single Robyn Hitchcock song off the live Gotta Let This Hen Out album. I think that was the first live album — after Frampton Comes Alive — where I fell for a band based on the live act and the studio stuff seemed to fall short after that.

Robyn Hitchcock plays the World Cafe Live 11/19. There’s still good table seats on the floor available. Robyn’s touring doing an acoustic show.

And if you are looking for Album-of-the-Day — the LaLa widget maker seems to be broken for embedding full albums. I’ll keep an eye on that and if they get it working, we’ll resume albums of the day.

Friday Record Party: One

Your One-and-Only Favorite Song by an Artist/Band

Friday Record Party newcomer, Lester, suggested this concept this week. Lester suggested yesterday’s Album of the Day and I figured we’d honor him further by using his FRP idea as well.

Here’s the concept:

  1. Pick an artist
  2. pick your ONE AND ONLY most favorite song by that artist. You can only pick one song per artist.
  3. Once an artist has been posted others may only pick their one-and-only favorite from that artist (assuming you disagree with the original poster’s choice — and that’s usually what goes on here at the record party).
  4. Bottom line - one song per artist per FRP participant.
  5. As always, support your choice with logic (BPMCG) or no logic (ME).

Yma Sumac (via Calliopeice)

Saw a mention on Dr. Brown’s Facebook page about Yma Sumac and followed up to find out the Yma Sumac passed away this week.

I must confess that I don’t know the lady but after a listen to this song and others, I don’t know why. She looks and sounds right up The Ogre’s alley and mine. (I particularly appreciated that Nina Hagen was high on Sumac’s friends list on MySpace page. Memo to myself: see if we can do Nina Hagen for album of the day.)

Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True

Recent new visitor and now Friday Record Party Regular, Lester, offered up this album as worthy of an Album-of-the-Day for the Ogre: “probably one of the finest ever first albums…Elvis Costello My Aim is True.”

I know BPMc3 will be all over this. I credit my Montana sister, E=MC(G), with bringing Elvis into the Ship Rd household back in 1977. 31 years later and the new King holds up all too well.

Easily, three or four songs off this album have made showings on various Friday Record Parties.

Lester, we will hoist a beer to Elvis and your fine taste at Grady David’s Friday night.

If you have an idea for an album-of-the-day, email us at ogremcg@feedtheogre.com.

Spontaneous Post-Election Wednesday Record Party

Been listening to the KEXP John Richards Morning Show where he’s been spinning post-election mood songs. As he spins them, I’ll post them here (or go listen live and give them your support). Feel free to add your own.

Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On

Last night before the results started coming in I was thinking of what music to play this morning. Then as Obama gave his victory speech I was thinking of Husker Du’s New Day Rising — but that lacked soul.

This morning - just now - I thought: what album can, at the same time, acknowledge our troubles but also offer some hope and urge togetherness? Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On does it for me.

If you have ideas for an album of the day, send it in along with a back-story to ogremcg@feedtheogre.com.

remember: once you play through the album of the day it will revert to 30-second samples unless you switch to a different browser or clear your cookies.
